What Happens If Your House Keys Are Delayed on Moving Day?

You’ve packed the last box, the removals vehicle is loaded, and you’re ready to head to your new home. Having your house keys delayed on moving day can be frustrating, but keeping your removals team informed helps everyone manage the wait.

Why are house keys delayed on moving day?
Keys are normally released once the seller’s solicitor confirms that the purchase money has arrived and completion has taken place. Delays can happen while waiting for mortgage funds or bank transfers. If you’re part of a property chain, the money may need to pass through several transactions, so a hold-up elsewhere in the chain can affect when you receive your keys.
Even when your belongings are packed and ready, the legal completion process may still be underway.
What happens while we’re loading?
When our crew arrives, the team leader will walk around your home with you. This is your chance to point out anything that needs special care, as well as anything that isn’t going with you.
We’ll then load the vehicle, keeping in mind what needs to come off first at your new property. Before we leave, we’ll check with you that everything included in the move is on board.
Keep essentials such as your phone, medication, important documents and the details of your solicitor and estate agent with you. You may need them before the vehicle is unloaded.
House keys delayed on moving day: what happens next?
Let us know as soon as you hear about a delay. If we’re still at your current property, we can carry on with the work there. If the vehicle is loaded and we’ve reached your new home, we’ll wait for access and keep in touch with you.
Once you call to say you have the keys and are on your way, we may be able to start unloading garden items and plants, if there’s safe access to the garden. Then, when you arrive, we can get straight on with unloading the house and garage items.
Your quote sets out the time allowed for your move and the rate for any additional time, should it be needed. It’s worth having a look at those details before moving day so you know what to expect if there’s a wait.
Who should you call about the keys?
Your solicitor or conveyancer can update you on the progress of completion. Once the keys can be released, your estate agent can tell you where and how to collect them.
Before moving day, it helps to know who will contact you, which agent holds the keys and what time their office closes. Save the relevant phone numbers somewhere easy to find.
A delay isn’t always something you can prevent. The best thing you can do is stay reachable and pass on any updates as soon as you get them. We’ll do what we can to keep the move going and get you settled once your new home is ready.
